Lonely Lillie
This song is from the Pokemon Sun and Moon Original Soundtrack.
Honestly, I can't believe that I forgot about this song (I only remembered it today).
This composition is just great. It's reflective, introspective, and graceful: a perfect mirror for Lillie's character arc in the games. I absolutely love the use of the tremolo effect at the end of the song. Some of the textures that people can get out of the piano surprises me.
This song is special to me because I was obsessed with it when it came out.
As a kid, I was forced to take piano lessons by my parents. Over time, I grew to hate it and eventually, I finally convinced my parents to stop putting me in lessons in like 6th grade or something. I thought that I hated playing the piano and never wanted to do it again.
Years later, it was Lonely Lillie, among other songs, that inspired me to try again, but on my own terms.
This was one of the songs that I attempted to learn in my own time. I didn't get that far (I could only play around the first 30 seconds or so), but I had fun while doing it!
Turns out, I really just hated doing the lessons and recitals. Sure, I was learning technique and whatever songs were in those booklets (if you know, you know), but there was never anything that we did in the lessons that strongly connected with me on a personal level. The only reason I was motivated to play was that my parents always reminded me that I needed to do it. All my motivation was based on appeasing other people, and I never had any intrinsic motivation to keep me going.
It's songs like Lonely Lillie that inspire me to make and play music for myself first and foremost.
I don't play the piano anymore, but picking it up again is on the long list of projects I want to do.
(As I am writing this, I am noticing the slight parallels that this story has with Lillie's character arc in the Sun and Moon games. That's funny)
