Spike Tag

I was in middle school when the 3DS version of Super Smash Bros 4 released.

It was the game of choice for my group of friends during lunch.

I don't know how the idea originated, but when we played the game, we played Spike Tag.

In Smash Bros, Spike is a name given to certain attacks that knock the enemy roughly downwards. They can be difficult to hit, but very rewarding. Perhaps the most well-known spiking move is Mario's FORWARD AERIAL attack.

In Spike Tag, the rules were simple: someone was it, and if that player killed another player with a spike, that other player would become it instead. Whoever is it persists indefinitely until they transfer the title to someone else, even across multiple days or play sessions.

Spike Tag was basically a layer on top of the existing games of Smash Bros that the four of us played together. It was essentially a game that lasted the entire school year.

It was a very fun game to play!

You end up being more wary around the person who is it, because any unlucky circumstance could mean becoming it yourself. You might form impromptu alliances with other players, where you try to set each other up for spiking moves or help each other out in dire situations. If you are it, then the end of lunch time becomes your time limit, lest you remain it until the next lunchtime: a fate worse than death. Sometimes, a careless mistake makes your blood run cold as you see your character spiked into oblivion, right as the lunch bell chimes.

It also added a layer of strategy to the game that was different from normal Smash Bros strategy.

If you were it, then the choice of who to play as was important; not all characters had spike moves, and not all spikes are created equal. Ganondorf's spike move is powerful and reasonably easy to hit, but he's slow and suffers from a bad recovery which may make you more vulnerable. Mario is much more well-rounded, but his spike move is quite challenging to hit. I enjoyed playing Zelda because her spike move was easy to hit and her teleporting recovery move was difficult for others to hit and interfere with.

If you weren't it, then maybe you would play a character that you were comfortable with so that you can do better in fights. You might opt to play a character with a better recovery move so that spikes are less dangerous to you. Maybe, you would play a character with a strong spiking move in anticipation of becoming it.

Spike Tag made every lunchtime something to really look forward to, and was always a topic of discussion among ourselves. In a way, Spike Tag transcended the bounds of the game.

It was something special that the four of us were able to share throughout the school years.
