Cool Music I Listened To In 2024

I thought that it would be fun to list a bunch of music that I listened to in 2024 and maybe write a bit about each one. So here it is:

(sorry for all the video embedding related lag on this page)

Released in 2024

Ground Vision by Drive45

Drive45 is excellent at riding the line between understandable and completely incoherent. This is evident in the music, lyrics, and incredible visuals of Ground Vision. It makes for this really interesting experience of not knowing what the heck is going on at all. I had this on repeat and I can say that I almost understand the things that it's trying to say. Whether or not that means that I've gone insane by listening to it is a different matter.

EVERYWORLD EP by frogmint

I absolutely love the textures in this EP. It has a very spacious feel that draws me in.

The Dissolution of Albedo Säure by Lemonectric

Stumbled randomly upon this album on YouTube. I really love the variety of moods to fit the different parts of the narrative. Shepard tones are cool.

daltonists by daltonists

Often, YouTube will just randomly recommend music that absolutely blows me away. daltonists' first release demonstrates their ability to make incredible grooves. My favorite song in the album is ochrowy.

The Big Big Deal by tv room

Very pop-like sounds that aren't afraid to be very weird. All wrapped up in a very saccharine package.

What We Love and Cherish by spellcasting

Every song that spellcasting makes is an explosion of joy and love. I really enjoy songs that experiment with incredibly harsh and crunchy sounds that make it sound like your speakers are breaking. spellcasting injects this sort of texture into many tracks, almost as if your speakers can't fully handle the intensity of emotion being conveyed. I also love the slightly off-kilter feel that many of the songs have, which gives them a very whimsical feeling. What We Love and Cherish is a showcase of some of the best that spellcasting has to offer. Favorite song: Me and My Robot Wife.

global tourist assembly by voljum

Simply incredible composition and sound. It needs no more explanation.

Unreleastic Project Roadmap by K^2 (HALLEY LABS)

A Chiptune-esque album that carves out its own unique sound by incorporating elements from many other areas of music. Favorite song: Spacewalk.

Balatro OST by LouisF (for Balatro)

Given that Balatro basically has one song and a couple variations of it, the fact that people can listen to it for hours and hours without being tired of it is a show of skill. It's just that good. The song just draws you in an does not let go (just like Balatro).

Splatoon 3: Side Order Soundtrack

Splatoon always has really great soundtracks, but when I heard the trailer to Side Order, I was shocked with how good it was. Every single song is so unique with its own sound design and mood, and yet the entire OST fits together really well. I'm a huge fan of really weird and experimental electronic sound production in music, and this feels specifically catered to me.

Shinbagumi by Ginger Root

I have personal attachment to this album because I went to see Ginger Root's SHINBAGUMI tour in Atlanta, Georgia. Overall a very solid album.

Forgotten Arcade - ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY EDITION by Frizk

Had this on loop frequently during the later months of the year.

Killing Created by Rhodes

For their first full length album, they have already cemented a great sound and style.

Summerfade by roboctopus

I've been a roboctopus fan for years now and it's awesome to hear new music from them.

STAFFcirc vol. 9 - MIDI MODULE FANATIX

STAFFcirc always brings together some of the most skilled musicians to create very experimental and cohesive albums.

Computer Music 2020-2023 by PROTODOME

PROTODOME consistently makes some of the best electronic music out there. His style of percussive, explosive bursts of energy is something that I haven't been able to get anywhere else.

Infloresce Snowdrop Festival 2024

At the end of every year, Infloresce puts on a virtual music festival showcasing music created in the past year by people in and around the community. It's always an amazing event with hours of incredible music. If I needed to describe the general area of music I enjoy, there would be no better answer than the music in Infloresce's Snowdrop Festivals.

cloud break by ajackal

This song has a good groove and baseline. It's good for listening repeatedly on loop forever (which I did).

Chartwells Integrity Breakdown by Maxo

The first time that I listened to this, I knew that I really enjoyed it but did not comprehend what was happening. It took a couple of listens to get a grasp of it. This song is an incredible burst of energy.

Kinoko Forest, Magnolia, Shigoku District by MegaBaz

These original songs by MegaBaz are just incredible. I fell in love with the melody and energy of these songs and haven't tired of them. MegaBaz knows how to get the most out of these chips.

Not Released in 2024

Era Chimæra by honabai, hyquo, Onefin, tailspun

This song was made in 24 hours by 4 people which is an incredible feat. It kind of has that sort of frantic construction of many different sections that a challenge like that would inspire.

Places From My Dreams by Onefin (Alta Cove)

Places From My Dreams is an eclectic mix of music. Each track has something different and new to experience. Favorite Track: Alta Cove.

SNDWRK/gh by Greenhouse (HALLEY LABS)

The more I listened to this album, the more I ended up liking it. A great blend of harsh and gentle sounds, and is emotionally evocative all the way through. Favorite Track: Either radiokids, t_muralis, c_majalis, or tranq maybe?

Random by Sobrem and Silentroom

I listened to it and I was just floored with how good it was. Knows how to be very chaotic and energetic in a very controlled and precise manner. Also has a really good accompanying music video.
